Key Takeaways
Online color analysis, at a glance
- Online color analysis works when it’s done by a trained eye reading real photos of your hair, skin and eyes, not by an app or a filter.
- My virtual sessions follow three steps: you send photos, we sit down and talk, and your palette arrives as a book of swatches.
- Most of my clients work with me virtually, across the United States and in other countries. The reading is the same as in person.
- Natural light is everything. It’s how the true colors of your eyes, skin and hair show up, on camera or in a mirror.
Most of my clients never sit in the same room with me. They live across the United States and in other countries, and their palettes are every bit as precise as the ones I create in person.
So when someone asks me whether online color analysis really works, my answer is yes, with one condition. It works when a trained eye is doing the reading. It doesn’t work when an algorithm guesses your season from a selfie.
In this post I’ll walk you through exactly how a virtual session with me works, what I’m looking for in your photos, why apps and filters so often get it wrong, and how to know whether online is right for you.
How Online Color Analysis Works With Me
Online color analysis is personal color analysis done at a distance: I read your coloring from photos and a live conversation, then build your palette from what I see. Here’s how it unfolds.
- You send me photos. Before we meet, you send photos of yourself. My team will tell you exactly what to send.
- We sit down and talk. Virtually or in person, we have a real conversation. I read your hair, skin and eyes together with your essence, and I talk you through what I see and why.
- Your palette arrives as a book of swatches. Your exact colors, in a beautiful physical book you’ll actually carry when you shop.
That conversation in step two matters more than people expect. Your colors are only half of the reading. The other half is your essence: the energy you carry, which tells me whether your palette should feel bright and playful, soft and gracious, rich and earthy, or crisp and dramatic. I can’t get that from a photo alone. I get it from talking with you.
And the length? It varies, because people vary. We take the time your palette needs.
What I’m Reading in Your Photos
The only way we are seen by others is through our pigment. So in your photos, I’m studying what I call your Sacred Triad: your hair, your skin and your eyes. Every color in your palette has to honor all three.
Your eyes. Eyes are never one color. “Brown” eyes might hold bronze, brass, copper, olive or amber. Blue eyes might carry green, turquoise, gold, silver or gray. I call these the lights of your eyes, and they shape the key colors of your palette, down to your jewelry.
Your skin. I’m looking at your skin tone and its undertone. The undertone often shows most clearly on your lips and where the skin is thinnest, around your eyes and ears.
Your hair. I need your natural color as it is today. If you’ve colored your hair for years, your roots and your eyebrows tell me the truth.
Here’s why light matters so much. The lights of your eyes show up in natural light. Under a warm lamp or a cool office fluorescent, the very colors I’m trying to read shift. That’s true in a mirror, and it’s even more true on camera.
Why Apps and Filters Get Your Colors Wrong
Women arrive at my door having been typed two or three times already, by an app, a consultant or a friend with a swatch fan. None of the answers agreed.
I understand that frustration personally. Before I studied with Suzanne Caygill, the originator of seasonal color theory, I’d had my colors done ten times. All ten palettes were different.
Apps and filters fail for three reasons.
- They change the colors they’re reading. A filter is designed to adjust your skin, your eyes and the light. That’s the exact information a color analysis depends on.
- They hand you a label, not a palette. Knowing you’re a “Summer” tells you your family of colors. It doesn’t tell you which blue is your Power Color or which neutral comes from your eyes.
- They can’t read your essence. One of my clients, Jana, had typed herself as a Winter for years. The moment I did her analysis, I knew she was a Spring. Her coloring told the story, and so did the joy that came through once she relaxed. No app would have caught that.
A season isn’t a swatch. It’s your pigmentation, read together with who you are.
What Arrives After Your Session
Your personal Color DNA palette arrives as a book of swatches, and every color in it has a job.
- Your neutrals: formal, semi-formal and casual, drawn from your hair, eyes and skin
- Your Romantic Red: the color of passion and celebration, found in the natural flush of your cheeks
- Your Power Color: for when you want to be center stage
- Your Support Color: for teamwork, or when you want to let someone else lead
- Your Optional Colors and metals: the lighter values of your palette and the metallics found in your eyes and hair
Because the palette is physical, you can hold it next to a jacket in a store and know in seconds. No more guessing in fitting rooms.
It even helps on screen. If you spend your days on video calls, a lighter value of your Power Color makes a beautiful background behind you.
Is Online Color Analysis Right for You?
For most people, yes. Here’s how to think about it.
- If you don’t live near me, or you live outside the United States, a virtual session gives you the same reading without the travel.
- If you’ve already been typed by an app or a quiz and something still feels off, you need a trained eye, and that eye works just as well across a screen.
- If you want to meet in person, that’s available too. The process is the same: photos first, then we sit down together.
- If you’re hoping for a quick label in five minutes, online color analysis with me isn’t that. It’s a conversation and a palette you’ll use for the rest of your life.
What to Do Next
- Take a full-length photo in natural light, in an outfit you wear often. What do you see first: you, or the clothing?
- Count how many times you’ve been typed, and whether the answers agreed.
- Notice the light you usually dress in. If it’s a dim closet or a bathroom bulb, you may not be seeing your real colors at all.
- Book a short conversation with my team when you’re ready.
Your first step today: step outside with a hand mirror and look at your eyes in daylight. Notice how many colors are there.
Your Colors Don’t Depend on Your Zip Code
Your Color DNA is the same whether we’re in the same room or on opposite sides of the world. What matters is the eye doing the reading and the conversation we have. Online color analysis simply removes the distance between you and your palette.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is online color analysis accurate? It can be, when a trained color expert reads real photos taken in natural light and talks with you directly. It’s far less reliable when an app or filter assigns a season automatically, because filters alter the very colors being read.
What do I need for a virtual color analysis? You’ll send photos of yourself before the session; my team will tell you exactly what to send. Then we meet, virtually or in person, and talk through your colors and essence together.
How do I receive my palette after an online session? Your palette arrives as a beautiful book of swatches, your exact colors in a physical form you can carry when you shop.
Do you work with clients outside the United States? Yes. Most of my clients work with me virtually, across the United States and in other countries.
