Key Takeaways
Your true color palette, at a glance
- Every color in your palette carries an energy, and matches some part of who you are.
- Your neutrals ground you, your eye color centers you, your skin tone connects you and your hair color anchors you.
- Your Romantic Red brings passion, your Power Color brings presence and your Support Color brings ease to a group.
- Choosing the right color for the moment is what turns a palette into results.
A true color palette, the result of a color palette analysis, isn’t just a set of colors that suit you. Every color in it carries an energy, and when that energy matches some part of who you are, there’s coherence. People see you fully.
I learned this most clearly from clients who were wearing their own colors and still not getting the response they wanted. My client Kate was a Summer, and her favorite suit was in her palette. It was also her Support Color, the color of empathy and cooperation, and she wore it to every final sales meeting. She kept losing. When she switched to her Power Color, she started closing clients with ease.
In this post I’ll walk you through every color in a true color palette, the way I teach it in my book, Dress Your Essence: what it expresses, where it comes from in your coloring and when to wear it.
Your Neutrals: The Building Blocks
Your neutrals are the foundation of your wardrobe. They relate directly to your hair, skin and eyes, and they create a sense of grounding for you and the people around you.
- Formal neutral: your deepest neutral, for black-tie and important formal occasions
- Semi-formal neutral: for slacks, skirts and basics; it complements every other color in your palette
- Casual neutral: your hair color, for shoes, belts and pieces that ground any outfit
One caution: just as you wouldn’t drive your car in neutral, outfits without at least a little color can feel stagnant. Bring your eye color or skin tone into the mix for energy.
Your Hair Color: Grounding
Your hair color is very grounding, and it adds a whole new dimension to your wardrobe when you use it as a base. Shoes in your hair color in particular ground any combination of colors. The eye understands the harmony, and the brain recognizes the relatedness between you and your clothing.
Your Eye Color: Centering
It’s said that the eyes are the windows of the soul. Your essence looks out from behind your eyes. When you wear your eye color, you extend that soulfulness into the room. You bring a sense of equilibrium to your appearance and foster trust and clear communication.
Wear it when: negotiating, asking for a raise, making an offer on a home or restoring calm in a family conversation. Clients have worn their eye color when appearing in court, negotiating big deals and settling family disputes. It’s also beautiful for yoga, meditation and other spiritual practices.
Think of your eye color as the hearth of your home, or the centerboard on a sailboat: the calm in the storm.
Your Skin Tone: Intimacy
Your skin tone expresses intimacy, relatedness, affinity and fellowship. It helps build trust and makes you more accessible to others.
Wear it when: meeting your in-laws, spending time with your parents or children, or on a first date. Skin tones, or variations like tonal pink, peach or sand, are a lovely alternative to white or ivory shirts.
How each season wears it: Springs in prints or crisp fabrics; Summers in romantic lace or florals; Autumns in richly textured fabrics with deep browns and terra cottas; Winters paired with black or another dark neutral to keep their contrast.
Your Romantic Red: Passion and Celebration
Your Romantic Red lets you be emotionally persuasive and evokes your passion for life. I’ve heard clients tell me that when they wear it, strangers spontaneously open doors for them, buy them dinner and invite them to events.
Wear it when: you want passion and romance to take center stage. Your birthday, a romantic evening, a charity presentation where emotional persuasion is key.
Many people have a love-hate relationship with red. The key is to find your red, the shade that truly represents you. Once you realize your Romantic Red is part of your own inner light, other associations fade. Be responsible with it, though: it can evoke a range of emotions in others as well as in you.
Your Power Color: Dramatic Presence
Your Power Color heightens your energy and amplifies your natural coloring, allowing you to be fully seen while conveying authority. It’s the color of leadership, expertise and respect.
Wear it when: you want to be seen as a leader, or you need an energy boost. Pitches, keynotes, final meetings. If a full suit feels like too much, start with a scarf, jewelry or a pocket square.
Most of us think of “power dressing” as a black suit and white shirt. That really only works for Winters. For everyone else, black and white creates distance. Your true Power Color will never overpower you.
By comparison, your Supplementary Power Color is quieter but still conveys confidence, for days that call for authority without full drama.
Your Support Color: Nurturing
Your Support Color softens your energy and allows you to be there for others. It calms you and the people around you, and it creates a sense of community.
Wear it when: you’re out with friends, with family, working as part of a team or looking for a solution that supports everyone. It’s invaluable when building a team.
Autumns in particular benefit from wearing their Support Color at work; it helps them connect with team members who may be intimidated by their big personalities. Winters can wear theirs to soften the natural sense of distance in their energy.
Your Optional Colors and Metals
Optional Colors are lighter values of your palette, and they bring a lighter energy. A lighter Romantic Red brings emotional accessibility without the intensity; a lighter Power Color brings a more playful side to your assertiveness. They’re perfect for shirts, scarves, warm-weather clothing and home interiors.
Metals bring movement and aliveness to your outfits. Whether it’s a metallic dress or simply your jewelry, your metals add energy to anything you wear.
Putting It Together: Dressing With Intention
Here’s the formula I share with every client. Before you get dressed, ask:
- What is the opportunity?
- How do I want to feel in this situation?
- What specific result do I want?
Then choose the colors that match. A first date might call for your skin tone with a neutral. Supporting your daughter at an audition might call for your Support Color with a casual neutral. A job interview where you want to lead and be a team player might call for your Power Color with your Support Color.
What to Do Next
- Look at what you wore to your last important meeting. Which color was it, and what did it say?
- Find one piece in your eye color and wear it to your next difficult conversation.
- Try a top in your skin tone instead of white or ivory.
- Book a short conversation with my team to find every color in your true palette.

Every Color Has a Purpose
Your true color palette isn’t a set of pretty colors. It’s a language. Every color in it comes from you, and every color says something about you. When you know what each one means, you can choose exactly the part of yourself you want the room to see.
