Key Takeaways

Seasonal color analysis, at a glance

  • Seasonal color analysis places you in one of nature’s four seasonal harmonies: Spring, Summer, Autumn or Winter.
  • In the way I teach it, your season describes your essence, the energy you carry, as well as your coloring: sunlight, twilight, firelight or moonlight.
  • Each season has its own color harmony, from Spring’s clear triads to Winter’s black, white and jewel tones.
  • Your season is the family your colors belong to. Your personal palette is the exact set of colors within it that come from you.
  • The quickest way to start is a season quiz, answered as the person you are when no one is watching.

When I first studied with Suzanne Caygill, the originator of seasonal color theory, I thought I was learning about color. I was really learning about people.

Before I met her, I’d had my colors done ten times by various “professionals.” All ten palettes were different. What Suzanne showed me was that the seasons aren’t just a way of sorting skin tones. They’re Mother Nature’s cycle of creation, and each of us carries one of them, in our coloring and in our energy.

More than 40 years and over 10,000 clients later, that’s still the foundation of everything I do. In this guide I’ll walk you through what seasonal color analysis is, what each of the four seasons looks and feels like, how to find yours, and where your season stops and your personal palette begins.

What Is Seasonal Color Analysis?

Seasonal color analysis identifies which of nature’s four seasonal harmonies you were born with: Spring, Summer, Autumn or Winter. Each season is a family of colors that share a quality of light, and when you dress in your season’s harmony, your coloring and your clothes start telling the same story.

Most seasonal color analysis stops at your skin: warm or cool, light or deep. Mine never has. In the way I teach it, each of us carries one season as our seasonal essence, and it shows up in two places at once: in your physical coloring and in the energy you bring into a room.

That’s why your season is the right place to begin. Once you know it, and how to find yours is simpler than most people think, every other color decision gets easier.

The Four Seasons as I Teach Them

Each season is a stage in nature’s cycle: beginnings, sustaining, fruition and stillness. Suzanne taught me to see them, and I’ve come to know them, as our seasonal essence: the light each of us brings into the world.

Spring: Sunlight

Spring is an energy of beginnings: buoyant, playful, enthusiastic, the spark that starts things. Springs inspire and motivate others, often at the leading edge of new endeavors.

Spring’s colors: clear, lively colors worn in triads. Think of a green dress with cognac boots and a scarf with touches of purple. The contrast keeps things fresh.

Summer: Twilight

Summer is an energy of sustaining: gracious, compassionate, reflective, a deep listener who brings calm and balance to work and relationships.

Summer’s colors: cool, muted colors that sit next to each other on the color wheel: teal, navy, grape, eggplant, violet and burgundy, generally soft and sophisticated.

Autumn: Firelight

Autumn is an energy of fruition: warm, strong, complex, a natural leader who asks, “What’s the bottom line?” and never does anything halfway.

Autumn’s colors: warm, rich and rustic colors from the warm side of the color wheel: rust, bronze, brown, olive to hunter green, mustard, umber and deep emerald, with mixed metals like bronze, copper and antique gold.

Winter: Moonlight

Winter is an energy of stillness: discerning, elegant, visionary, never settling for less than the best. Winters see things from a distance and articulate the highest outcome.

Winter’s colors: black, white, metallics and saturated cool jewel tones, worn with contrast and clean lines.

Why Your Season Is More Than Your Coloring

When your coloring and your energy share the same season, there’s coherence. People see you fully, and you feel at home in your own skin.

When they don’t match, something feels off, and it’s usually because of how we’ve learned to live. Essence is who you are. Temperament is how you adapted to survive. My mother, a Spring, was always the life of the party, and I learned to act like a Spring to please her. I’m a Winter.

We also reach for the season we think we lack. Springs may borrow Winter’s drama to be taken seriously. Summers may take on Autumn’s command to be seen as strong. Autumns may soften into Summer to avoid taking charge. In every case, dressing the opposite season leaves you feeling disconnected from yourself.

Your season shapes your style, too:

SeasonStyle essenceThink
SpringFresh, crisp, playful, unique but not loudPolka dots, animated prints, fun jackets
SummerFlowing and unstructured, based on the S-curveChiffon, lace, sheer layers, romantic jewelry
AutumnComplex, full of texture and movementSuede, tweed, leather, animal prints, statement jewelry
WinterSilhouetted, contrasting and angularClean lines, architectural prints, luxurious fabrics

How to Find Your Season

The quickest way to find your season is a quiz. My Seasonal Essence quiz is free, and there’s a 38-question version in my book, Dress Your Essence. A few things make the difference between a right answer and a wrong one:

  • Answer as the person you are when no one is watching, not your public face or the image you want to present.
  • Separate what you are from what you’re drawn to. We’re often attracted to our opposite season.
  • Check your coloring in natural light. Look at the lights in your eyes, your skin’s undertone where it’s thinnest, and your natural hair color.

As a rule of thumb, Springs tend toward golden or warm pink undertones, Summers and Winters toward cool rose or violet, and Autumns toward ruddy red-orange or copper.

A quiz is a compass, not a substitute for a consultation. My client Jana came to me certain she was a Winter. She dressed mostly in black and white with silver accents. The moment I did her color analysis, I knew she was a Spring. She’d taken on heavy responsibility young, and her joy hadn’t felt safe to show. Today her palette is a Blooming Spring: deep teal, peacock blue, bright iris and ruby red.

Four Seasons, Twelve or Sixteen?

If you’ve researched color analysis, you’ve probably been told you need a 12- or 16-season chart to get it right, with sub-types like True Autumn or Soft Summer.

I understand the appeal. Real people don’t fit neatly into four boxes. But a finer grid is still a grid. Twelve pre-packaged palettes are closer to you than four, and they still weren’t made from you. Many women come to me having been typed two or three times, in different systems, and none of the answers agreed.

So I teach the four seasons, because they describe your essence, and then I go one step further.

Your Season Is the Neighborhood

Seasonal color analysis tells you which family of colors you belong to. It doesn’t tell you which colors are yours.

A season is a neighborhood. Your personal palette is the address: your exact neutrals, your Romantic Red from the natural flush of your cheeks, your Power Color for center stage and your Support Color for teamwork. Two women can share a season and still carry very different pigmentation.

That’s why, in a private session, I start with your season and then read your exact palette from you: from your Sacred Triad of hair, skin and eyes. Your palette is as individual as your fingerprint.

What to Do Next

  • Read the four seasons above and notice which light sounds like you: sunlight, twilight, firelight or moonlight.
  • Look at your eyes, undertone and natural hair in daylight with a hand mirror.
  • Notice the season you’re drawn to. Is it your opposite?
  • Take the Seasonal Essence quiz as the person you are when no one is watching.

Your first step today: ask a close friend which light describes you, and see if they agree with you.

You Are a Season, Not a Swatch

Seasonal color analysis isn’t about fitting yourself to a chart. It’s about recognizing the light you already carry, in your coloring and in your energy. When you dress in harmony with it, people stop seeing the outfit and start seeing you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is seasonal color analysis? Seasonal color analysis identifies which of nature’s four seasonal harmonies you belong to: Spring, Summer, Autumn or Winter. In my work, your season describes your essence, the energy you carry, as well as your coloring.

What are the four color seasons? Spring (sunlight: clear, lively colors in triads), Summer (twilight: cool, muted analogous colors), Autumn (firelight: warm, rich, earthy colors) and Winter (moonlight: black, white, metallics and saturated cool jewel tones).

How do I find my color season? Take a season quiz, answering as the person you are when no one is watching, then check your eyes, skin undertone and natural hair color in natural light.

Is seasonal color analysis the same as personal color analysis? No. Seasonal color analysis tells you which family of colors you belong to. Personal color analysis identifies your exact colors within that family, read from your own hair, skin and eyes.

Do you use 12- or 16-season color analysis? No. I teach the four seasons, which describe your essence, and then read each client’s exact palette from her own coloring rather than assigning a sub-type.
